Smartphone Reviews, iPhone 13 Pro 2021

Review the iPhone 13 Pro to know what makes the iPhone so famous? Is it because of the iconic Apple logo on the back?

Or photographic prowess? The smoothness and sophistication of the iOS platform? Premium show-off value perhaps? Of course, the shorter and simpler answer is: all of the above is correct!

The iPhone 13 Pro offers many improvements compared to its predecessor, and most involve core aspects such as performance, camera, and battery life.

Design

The iPhone 13 Pro has a look almost exactly like its predecessor the iPhone 12 Pro. The design looks premium and iconic, with a distinctive logo on the back.

The three-camera setup is placed in a square module at the top left, with a flat checkered design as in the iPhone 12 series.

The buttons and port placement are also the same, such as the Lightning port at the bottom, stereo speakers, mute slider switches, etc.

The phone is also rated IP68, which guarantees the phone is dust resistant and able to survive in water for 30 minutes at a pressure of 1.5 meters.

Display

With a 6.1-inch Retina XDR Super OLED display, it supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision with better brightness than the iPhone 12.

Dubbed ProMotion in Apple Speak, the LTPO screen on the iPhone 13 Pro has a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and can vary it between 12 points to 10Hz depending on content and user interaction.

This essentially results in smoother screen interaction, blur-free scrolling, and bug-free animations.

Camera

Another key update is in the camera sector. Apple isn't big in megapixel count, so the camera on the iPhone 13 Pro still has a 12MP sensor like last year.

However, the aperture size has been increased, pixel size has been increased and the telephoto sensor can zoom in up to 3x (compared to 2x on its predecessor).

There's a new Photography Style feature that Apple has added to the 13 Pro that gives you more flexibility when it comes to the look of the desired shot.

The iPhone 13 Pro has a natural-looking bokeh camera and an accurate skin tone. And shots of the ultra-wide sensor look sharp overall, without showing any distortion.

3x optical zoom is suitable for clicking macro shots. Ultrawide sensors that double for macro shooting in action when you bring your phone closer to the subject.

The enhanced sensor, additional features, and power of the new A15 Bionic chipset are also very beneficial for the 13 Pro's low-light photography capabilities, and the phone can take incredibly detailed photos even at night.

In terms of video, the main feature this time around is the new Cinematic mode which essentially acts as a portrait mode for the video, and can dynamically adjust the focus on the foreground and background as the incoming subject leaves the frame to give more cinema effects like the movie.

You can adjust your own focus manually by tapping.

For selfies, the front camera on the iPhone 13 Pro uses a 12 MP camera and SL 3D (depth/biometrics sensor) and Video 4K@24/25/30/60fps, 1080p@30/60/120fps, gyro-EIS

Software

In terms of software, there is iOS 15. Visually, it's not too different from iOS 14, but it brings a lot of internal improvements in terms of software features.

There are key new features including a new Focus mode that allows you to set different 'profiles' for different locations or times, giving temporary access to extra iCloud storage access, email privacy protection, notification summaries, and more.

Apple iOS 15

All new iPhones come with Apple iOS 15 which is not actually a significant update to iOS 14, but it is quite important such as the improvement of UI elements on the settings menu and icons, notifications, buttons.

This new version greatly improves FaceTime and Messaging, Notification management, Safari browser, Wallet, and Maps, also makes Photos and Highlights smarter.

One of the most important updates in iOS 15 is in FaceTime. The new app increasingly looks like Zoom, and supports Grid views.

It has a cleaner interface, optional background blur, spatial audio, and can make conference calls with non-Apple users using invitation links and chrome or edge web browsers.

Pacu Kitchen Performance

Apple's latest A15 Bionic chip supports all iPhone 13 models. It's Apple's second 5nm chip (a second-generation TSMC 5nm process) and packs 15 billion transistors – that's 27% more than the A14 in iPhone 12 phones.

This keeps the hexa-core processor architecture with 2 large Avalanche cores with a maximum speed of 3.23GHz and 4 small Blizzard cores.

There's an improved 5-core Apple GPU for Pro models and a 4-core Apple GPU for non-Pro. The 13 Pro has 6GB of RAM, up from 4GB non-Pro.

Its performance below the overall CPU and GPU is far superior to what you'll get from any new Android phone.

Battery & Charging

The iPhone 13 Pro delivers an increase in battery capacity compared to the previous generation – exactly 10% with a capacity of 3,095mAh.

Officially Apple did not explain about the maximum charging power the iPhone 13 can achieve with a USB-PD-powered adapter, but tests showed the iPhone 13 Pro's fast charging maxed out at 23W.

Users should provide their own charging solution for the iPhone 13 Pro because the phone is sold without an adapter. We've seen operators pack Apple's 20W USB PoweDelivery bricks.

In testing using a 23W adapter the iPhone 13 Pro was able to charge from 0% to 60% within 30 minutes. To reach 100% takes a total of 1:38 hours.

The iPhone 13 Pro also supports wireless charging up to 15W using a 7.5W MagSafe chip.
