OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G review: The most premium version is worth buying

Smartphone Reviews, OPPO Reno 6 pro 5G 2021

After reviewing the middle variant or the standard 5G version a few days ago, I moved on to oppo's other latest offerings in mid-2021. Not the best, but the class has arguably entered the realm of flagship. Oppo Reno6 Pro 5G.

This is the most premium OPPO Reno variant today. Previously, OPPO presented a Pro version with a price difference of Rp3 - Rp4 million from the standard variant. But this year is different, where OPPO Indonesia presents two additional variants on top of the 4G version. It exceeds twice the selling price of oppo Reno6 4G.

Yes, the price is fairly expensive, for a smartphone whose series is still used also for the mid-range class. At first I was a little pessimistic, but it didn't take long for me to draw the following conclusion: compared to the standard 5G variant, oppo Reno6 Pro 5G is more feasible with its premium price tag.

The features it brings seem to make oppo Find X3 Pro an optional choice for Gizmo friends who need a complete smartphone with a stylish design and have excellent camera quality. Here's the full review.

Indeed, in appearance, OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G looks more similar to the 4G version, aka not as beautiful as the 5G version that carries a retro design. The left and right sides of the front and rear body are given a 3D arch that makes it comfortable in the grip, and of course the rear body uses Reno Glow finishing with a doff surface.

It feels comfortable to carry a quality smartphone in light weight (188 grams) and thin (8mm). The bulge of the rear camera module is also not too large, while the Lunar Grey color option that I hold looks like a dark blue color approaching gray, becoming bright when caught light from various angles.

The color gradation reminds me of the previous OPPO Reno4 color options. There are a total of four camera sensors on the rear body. As for the side of this smartphone, you will not find the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack. The slot for two nano SIM cards is pinned at the bottom—yes, you can't add a microSD card to the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G.

If the rear design is similar to the 4G variant, the easiest way to distinguish it is to look at the front screen design. The left and right sides are given a fairly subtle arch but still visible, and does not interfere with the content displayed. Overall, appear premium in accordance with the DNA of OPPO smartphones in general.

In terms of specifications, it is not the best in its class, but it has one advantage brought from the flagship. Oppo Reno6 Pro 5G carries a 6.5-inch AMOLED panel. Although large, the dimensions are relatively compact, thanks to the 3D arch and the four thin bezels — give the screen-to-body ratio to more than 92%.

With a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz, this smartphone is also suitable for playing games, thanks to the speed of touch sampling rate up to 180Hz. The color coverage itself already supports 100% DCI-P3 and sRGB, plus supports HDR content from favorite video streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.

Outdoor use will be very convenient, thanks to the maximum screen brightness level up to 1100 nits. Its feature is video color enhancer, which can be activated on the Settings menu. Automatically, smartphones will convert digital for SDR content to HDR, can increase saturation and contrast of standard video content.

I personally have no problem with the maximum refresh rate, because the difference from 60Hz to 90Hz is very pronounced, but for higher it looks minor. This will also certainly affect the battery power consumption, where the chipset does not need to work harder to produce a smoother transition effect per second.

There is a fact that is quite surprising when I was checking the specifications of the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G camera. Apparently, the 50MP f / 1.8 sensor embedded in this smartphone uses the exact same hardware as the OPPO Find X3 Pro, the Sony IMX766.

The sensor has large physical dimensions for detail capture and high light, supports omnidirectional PDAF and OIS stabilization. While the telephoto sensor is also similar, which is 13MP f / 2.4 with 2x optical zoom & 5x hybrid zoom. Only the ultra wide-angle sensor is inferior, has a magnitude of 16MP with a diaphragm f / 2.2 without autofocus.

Under the three sensors placed parallel, there is a tiny 2MP sensor for close-up photos (macros). With this fact, I can really pede to capture photos everyday without the need to bring an iPhone or Google Pixel. The photo quality is completely reliable in all conditions, with AI features that provide sufficient HDR effects when needed.

Similarly, the night mode not only makes the photo situation brighter, but also increases color reproduction, detail and reduces noise quite effectively. Quite rarely I use it because without night mode is already bright, and when it needs to be activated, the photo shooting time is also relatively short.

The quality of the ultra wide-angle sensor is also relatively good for the equivalent price flagship size. And of course, the Bokeh Flare Portrait effect can provide more interesting portrait photos, both from the front and rear cameras. Unfortunately, AI Color Portrait is absent from this series.

The full photo of the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G camera can be accessed on the following album.

Considering the chipset used is more powerful, the quality of video recording through Bokeh Flare Portrait mode will look sharper, because it supports resolutions up to 1080p. All three main sensors support video recording up to 4K 30fps, but for 4K 60fps, it can only be for the main sensor. OPPO also provides a special slider to do a smoother zoom process as desired.

The AI Highlight Video feature also significantly provides a Live HDR effect during backlight conditions. While in low light conditions, the Ultra Night Video algorithm provides a little additional lighting, like the night mode in photos. All modes can also be added with portrait beautification to improve the face in real-time.

Running ColorOS 11.3 based on Android 11, OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G comes with features that are common with other latest Reno series. Starting from the O Relax application, SoLoop short video editing. For those of you who are used to waiting for the process of logging into the game, the Quick Return Bubble feature is present so you can access other applications without wasting time.

In addition to the vibration motor is very comfortable, finally on this most expensive variant, OPPO embeds the stereo speaker setup with an earpiece that is a secondary speaker. Combined with the Dolby Atmos effect, listening to music through both built-in speakers and TWS earphones sounds satisfying.

For security features, there is an option to use a behind-the-scenes fingerprint sensor (in-display) as well as the front camera. Both work very smoothly, even the front camera is able to detect faces even in dark lighting conditions.

Oh yes, a little note, what makes this smartphone a little less is the absence of IP rating or certain certifications related to water and dust resistance. So do not use while raining or exposed to splashes of water in the crucial part yes.

For information, OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G released in Indonesia has a slight difference from those launched in the country of origin. If there is a MediaTek chipset, the official local version runs Snapdragon 870 5G chipset from Qualcomm. The chip is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 865 series, popularly used best flagship in 2020.

Combined with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 type internal storage, the overall multitasking experience is already on par with a flagship. It runs fast and smooth lag-free, whereas I only activate the RAM Expansion feature with the smallest capacity addition option.

Well, because it is the most premium variant, users can choose the option of adding a larger virtual RAM, with a choice of 3GB, 5GB or 7GB. As a result, if maximized, it can reach 19GB. Smartphone temperature is also very maintained thanks to the vapor chamber-based hardware cooling system.

Thanks to its standard screen resolution and refresh rate and power-efficient chipset, the 4,500 mAh battery on the OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G can make intensive use throughout the day in just one charge. Recorded during use, I was able to achieve a 24-hour usage duration with a screen-on time of 4 hours, and the battery was 17%.

Use more mobile data, enable always-on display and often access the camera to take photos. So you can imagine if the scenario of use is lighter, of course it can be until the morning - afternoon the next day. And with a 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charger, charging to full takes only 30 minutes.

In order not to overcharge, optimized night charging feature is present to learn the habits of its users when charging, so that it only fully fills when it has reached the waking hours. What is lacking is the wireless charging feature, starting to be available on some smartphones at a cheaper price.

With a price of several million cheaper than the Find X3 Pro, OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G has its own appeal, bringing the essential advantages of the older brother. Quality screen with O1 Ultra Vision Engine, the main sensor of the camera is very quality, stereo speakers to Bokeh Flare Portrait.

The battery life is a little more durable. Indeed, it has not been equipped with waterproof certification or wireless charging, but I think OPPO is precisely 'removing' both features, rather than lowering the quality of the camera or performance. Make it worth selling with a price tag of Rp11 million.

Present as the most expensive option, it makes OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G can provide the quality of each of its features to the maximum, worthy to be the main choice in the price range.
