OnePlus 8T x OnePlus 8 Pro review: Design and key features

so first up there is no way in good faith you could describe either of these smartphones as compact that said the oneplus 8t is the more miniature of the two at just 6.55 inches compared with the six point seven eight inch one plus eight pro besides the obvious size difference there are a couple of other ways to tell which one is which as well so for instance the oneplus 8t has got slightly more rounded corners compared with the older airport for a slightly more comfortable hand feel although to be fair the fact that the oneplus 8t is more comfortable to use it's more likely to be down to its smaller stature another oneplus 8 pro you'll also notice that the screen just bends ever so slightly around the edges as well as a slightly curved display rather than the oneplus 8t it's completely flat that's for the actual materials well it's gorilla glass 5 both front and back on the oneplus 8t and the oneplus 8 pro as well not that you really know that when you have a squint at the back of both of these smartphones because they've got this lovely matte finish it's kind of frosted at glass and one of the benefits of that besides looking pretty damn lovely is the fact that they're actually quite resistant to fingerprints so you won't get lots of greasy marks all of them uh you know you will have to give them a buffing on your pants every sort of couple of days or so but nowhere near as bad as those mirrored glass smartphones you've got a choice of three different colors here with the 8 pro you've got this glacial green version otherwise you can also get it in ultramarine blue or onyx black meanwhile the oneplus 8t is available in this luna silver model otherwise the aqua marine green however bear in mind that which color you choose also dictates what specs you get with these oneplus handsets as well so for instance with the ht this lunar silver model has eight gigs of ram and 128 gigs of storage whereas if you go for the greeny version then what you get is 12 gigs of ram and 256 gigs of storage and unsurprisingly that will cost you a bit more now as far as ruggedness goes i have no complaints with either of these smartphones i've dropped both of them now from a sizeable distance onto a hard floor and it was a sphincter clenching moment both times don't get me wrong but they're both still working absolutely perfectly not even a scratch or a crack or a dent to speak of that said the oneplus 8 pro has picked up a couple of scratches on that display over the last few months and it doesn't come with a pre-installed screen protector unlike the oneplus 8t however while the oneplus 8 pro is fully ip68 water and dust resistant so absolutely fine if you take in the swimming pool drop it in the bath something like that the oneplus 8t is only splash proof so it'll be fine if you take it out in a bit of a drizzle but i wouldn't do any more than that when it comes to actually unlocking these one plus handset is an in-display fingerprint sensor in both cases and usually i'm not a fan of optical sensors i prefer a physical sensor but you know what the oneplus 8 pros has been doing the job for months now i haven't had to reset my prints or anything like that which has been a bit of a blessing and so far touch word on the oneplus 8t seems just as responsive and accurate and you do have full face unlock support as well so for whatever reason your hands are a bit grubby or whatever as you can see a quick tap of that power button it scans your mug and you're basically straight into your desktops again.

OnePlus 8T x OnePlus 8 Pro review: Software

now let's move on to the software and at the time i'm shooting this the oneplus 8t comes with the latest version of oxygen os oxygen s11 on top of android 11 fresh out of the box meanwhile the older oneplus a pro is still running oxygenos version 10 on top of android 10 but you've got many of the same features here you'll notice that uh quite a lot of differences are aesthetic so for instance the settings menu looks a lot nicer in my opinion on oxygen os 11. and as you can see everything in the settings and in the oneplus apps as well sort of shunted down a little bit so it's easier to use one-handed definitely a good thing considering these phones are absolute beasts but of course naturally that oxygen os 11 update will be coming to the oneplus 8 pro imminently along with android 11 as well so you'll get the same software features on both smartphones basically and if you want a closer look at the best bits of oxygen os 11 definitely go check out my full tips and tricks guide which is live right.

OnePlus 8T x OnePlus 8 Pro review: Display and audio

now now the display tech is very similar on both these smartphones as well you do get a gorgeous amoled panel on both of these handsets of course it is bigger on the pro with six point seven eight inch display compared with the six point five five inch one plus eight t and of course you do get that flat finish on the 8t versus the slightly curved effort on the pro besides that the main difference is the resolution you've got a full hd plus finish on the oneplus 8t whereas it's bumped up to a quad hd plus resolution on the oneplus 8 pro for super sharp visuals that said even when watching very high definition video side by side on the 8 pro and the 8th t there's minimal uh difference to be perfectly honest you have to squint really hard so notice the finer details on the 8 pro and the 80 is certainly great for watching a bit of movie action on the go both smartphones are capable of producing incredibly natural looking colors you've got a just noticeable color difference of just 0.3 so yeah really realistic natural looking visuals that's helped along by the really sharp contrast on both these smartphones as well they're actually both hdr 10 plus certified at the time i shot this video although you can only get hdl content on netflix on the pro the 8t hasn't been certified yet but that should be coming very soon indeed if you jump into the display settings on both of these smartphones you've got loads of bonus mods to play around with for instance the vibrant color effect which you have on both the 8 pro and the 8t and this just gives those colors a real boost which as you can see here working on the airport alongside the 8t does really make an impact as usual if you dive into the advanced section as well then you can go to screen calibration as you can see they're both set to natural at the moment but you can boost them up a little bit with the vivid setting otherwise dive into advanced you've got the srgb the amoled wide gamut set and display p3 as well and from the advanced settings you can also change the resolution of the 8 pro bump it down to full hd plus to match the 8t if you want to preserve battery life and both of these displays support a 120 hertz refresh rate otherwise you can see from the little bit of blurb here the refresh rate is actually switched between 60 and 120 depending on what you're doing uh in order to preserve battery life when needed but you can bump that down to 60 hertz full time if you do want to get a bit more power efficiency on the go you do have a stereo speaker output on both the 8 pro and the oneplus 8t as well although i would recommend connecting a pair of headphones if you do want to get a decent sound experience of course you don't have a headphone jack on either of these blowers unfortunately so you are stuck with bluetooth if you do have a good bit of dolby atmos support which can dynamically tweak the sound based on what you're doing watching a film listening to music whatever and as for the storage well that's your choice again based on which color you get you get either 128 gigabytes of storage or 256 gigs if i can actually find the storage section here we go um so plenty of space for all of your media and files and such forth even if you go for that base model although there's no micro sd support for expanding that it's also worth pointing out that you've got the faster ufs 3.1 storage on the oneplus 8t compared with the older ufs 3.0 on the oneplus 8 pro so it's slightly more efficient at the right and speeds and also a bit more power efficient too and that's particularly good news if your burst shot in a lot of high-res photos just means it's a little bit quicker and faster with the actual processing.

OnePlus 8T x OnePlus 8 Pro review: Performance and battery life

now what you get stuffed inside both of these smartphones is the snapdragon 865 premium chipset from qualcomm you don't get the plus model here on the 8t despite previous rumors but to be fair not many manufacturers have gone with that as you can see from my geekbench scores the oneplus 8 price goes slightly higher that's because this is the 12 gigabyte model uh whereas i've only got the 8 gigabyte oneplus 8t but certainly as far as performance goes even if you go for the base 8 gigabyte model both of these blows will blaze through the latest games like pubg mobile call of duty on top detail settings no worries at all and of course you've got that game space feature on both of these handsets as well it's been slightly improved and updated for oxygen os 11 so it's just easier to call up you just pull your finger down from one of the top corners basically and it adds a great little selection of features including the ability to message mates while you're gaming you got the notifications block on there so you are not disturbed and of course the usual fanatic mode as well you got full wi-fi 6 support on both of these one plus handsets and they both support 5g connectivity as well because you've got qualcomm's x55 modem slapped in there alongside the 865. on the battery life front it's basically uh identical as far as the actual capacity goes to 4510 milliamp cell here on the oneplus 8 pro standard 4500 here on the oneplus 8t but it's actually a dual battery design here on the 8t for the new warp charge 65 tech so while the older oneplus 8 pro only supports 30 watt charging you've got 65 watt charging here on the 80s you get full charge in about 40 minutes or so it takes over an hour here on the 8 pro as for the battery life well i have found that that has degraded somewhat on the oneplus air pro over the last six months and that shouldn't be a hardware issue because you've got a battery care feature on here which basically prevents overcharging if you do leave it plugged in all night long but i definitely do find that with a lot of screen on time i struggle often to make it all the way through a big long day with the oneplus 8 pro with oneplus 8t so far touchwedding can just about make it through a long day with plenty of screen on time but it is very early days with that one still so i'm going to keep on testing it for my full review but while the oneplus 8t definitely wins for the fast charging tech it's worth knowing that only the air pro can charge wirelessly again at that 30 watt rate,

OnePlus 8T x OnePlus 8 Pro review: Camera

and last up let's finish with a squint at the camera tech which as you can see for the freshdue oneplus 8t has gone away from that traditional central position and it's actually been shunted away in the corner now that primary sensor on both of these smartphones is a 48 megapixel but it is a different sensor as well the oneplus 8t uses the same imx 586 from sony that the original oneplus 8 used whereas the earpro upgrades that to an imax 689. in terms of the shutter speed the focus speed and everything nice and nippy on both of these smartphones they do shoot at 12 megapixels by default but you can quickly bump that up to 48 megapixels if you want a maximum resolution photo as long as the conditions are quite bright i did find on my side-by-side test that the oneplus 8t seems to cope a little bit better sometimes in high contrast situations compared with the pro you also get more natural looking colors on the at whereas the pro tends to boost the vibrancy quite a bit you've also got an ultra wide angle option on both the oneplus 8t and the oneplus 8 pro but again it's different tech you've got a 16 megapixel lens here on the oneplus 8t whereas the a pro has another 48 megapixel effect so you get sharper details with the aid pro but both of them are pretty rubbish when it comes to the color reproduction now as well as that ultra wide angle you also get an actual telephoto lens here on the ear pro as well which offers a three times hybrid zoom whereas in the case of the oneplus 8t there's no telephoto option so it's digital zoom all the way so i definitely prefer the flexibility of the oneplus a pro's camera setup that telephoto lens is great for getting a little bit closer to your subject without disturbing them it's a great use if you're an owner of a pet or a kid the oneplus 8t finishes off it's a quad lens setup with a five megapixel macro lens and a two megapixel model lens as well so if you dive into the filters you can get your mono mode on the go that just shoots a nice detailed black and white shot right here on the airport you've actually got a color filter lens for your photochromatic mode but that has basically been disabled because people were worried it could see through very fine thin clothing so that does absolutely bugger all now and you've got the usual standard array of bonus mods on both the 8t and the oneplus 8 pro so for instance a portrait mode which can just help to keep your subject nice and crisp and blur out the background with a bokeh style effect much like this and in those low light situations you've got the night skate mode as well which takes lots of different shots different exposure levels and then blends them together for more evenly balanced shot it tends to work pretty well as you can see there you've got a lot more background detail uh in both of these shots compared with what you would get with just using the standard auto modes and your full manual controls if you dive into the pro mode it's the same setup on both of these smartphones uh so you can capture raw images as well as jpeg at the maximum 48 megapixel resolution you can have a piddle about with all of the different settings and if you dive on into the video mode as well you do actually have a new video portrait mode uh here on the oneplus 8t which is something that i believe is coming to the 8 pro in a software update so again that'll just have that bokeh style effect in the background uh but apart from that again perfectly the same setup 4k resolution video at up to 30 or 60 frames per second otherwise you can see here only the oneplus 8 pro offers an hdr mode which is ideal if you've got strong contrast situations it doesn't make a massive amount of difference but it does help just a little bit to brighten up those darker areas and last up if we flip around to the front facing camera it's a 16 megapixel snapper in both cases as you can see sort of fairly wide angle view and everything you've got the usual portrait mode smarts and all that good stuff and it doesn't really matter which phone i use to be perfectly honest it still looks like i'm in mental anguish,
